Food, Glorious Food
There are many things tourists love about Ogunquit: the beautiful beaches; its friendly, welcoming community; and the wonderful Ogunquit Playhouse, with its Broadway-quality shows. High on everyone's list too, I'm sure, are the numerous restaurants. After all, what's a vacation without good food?
Guests often ask for our recommendations, so as I write this blog on a Saturday afternoon, with thoughts of "What do I want for dinner?", I'll share a few of our favorite places to eat. (More to come in a future blog.) Be aware that each of these restaurants is open year round, in case you see a menu you just can't resist.
The Roost Cafe and Bistro has long been a favorite. Before we bought the Beauport Inn, when we were coming to Ogunquit as tourists, Ellen and I discovered this restaurant, and
we've enjoyed eating here ever since. With an eclectic menu, there's something for everyone. Great choice for lunch/brunch; dinner; a light meal; or just drinks. Friendly owners and staff, and a welcoming vibe. An added plus: Roost Cafe is on Shore Road in Ogunquit, a short distance from our B&B and just a couple of blocks from Perkins Cove and the Marginal Way. It's the perfect spot for a walk after lunch or dinner. The fresh air will do you good.
If you're in the mood for an authentic Italian dinner, we recommend Angelina's Ristorante on Main Street in Ogunquit, a short distance from the center of town. Their weekly specials, like "Mangia Thursdays" (which is so popular, reservations are needed), can't be beat. Right next door to Angelina's is their more casual sister restaurant, Pizza Napoli, which has (as you may have guessed) Napoli brick oven pizzas. Open for lunch as well as for dinner, Pizza Napoli's menu has more than just pizza. Both restaurants offer daily specials, some of which include wine. (That got your attention, I'm sure.)
Joshua's is rated #1 in Wells, and for very good reason. The quality of their food is excellent, and consistently first-rate. They bake their own bread right on the premises, and during the summer, serve vegetables grown on their local farm. Joshua's is so popular, we always tell guests to make reservations in advance if they want to have dinner at Joshua's. We also advise them to try to save room for dessert. The creme brulee is Ellen's favorite, and the homemade mint chocolate chip ice cream is hard to pass up.
Mekhong Thai in Wells is always one of our recommendations for anyone who enjoys authentic, excellent Thai food. The atmosphere inside is relaxing and comfortable. As an added bonus, they can deliver to the Beauport Inn, a real plus when you just want to chill out at our B&B, and not have to venture out. Our current favorite is orange duck. Although I must admit, with so many good choices on the menu, it's sometimes hard to choose.
It's a short ride to R&R Chocolate in Wells, and well worth the trip. Located in the Wells Hannaford's Plaza, R&R Chocolate is not just for chocolate-lovers. In addition to a wide variety of mouth-watering chocolates, which are made right on the premises, they also serve homemade soups, salads, sandwiches, and fresh, made-to-your order cannoli, which are sold individually or arranged on a platter. Aside from all the yummy food, the store itself -- which was converted from a bank -- is really interesting, and quite unique.
